I have been playing quite a bit with Mame4Droid on my Shield Portable and am blown away by it. Almost every game works without frameskip.
Here are some of my observations so far:
- The new version from January 2014 finally allows me to put all my roms on the sdcard without any problems
- The MAME menu comes up when you press stick1 and stick2 (start+select) and allows you to change dipswitch setting and re-map controls.
- The Shield buttons are labeled almost correctly (I think B and A are swapped) when re-binding inputs.
- Outrun works perfect with analog controls on the left stick. I just had to press joy1 and joy2 to bring up the menu and configure the gear-switching to one of the shoulder buttons.
- Power Drift also works perfectly! Unbelievable.
- MK1-3 also seem to work perfectly. I had to re-configure the buttons to make it more comfortable to play.
- The emulator correctly saves NVRam settings. That means I only had to sit through the Viper Phase One update screen once. Viper worked pretty OK concerning emulation speed, but the sound was garbled.
- Gunforce 2 works great, too.
I was unable to get Street Fighter 3 to work - it didn't show up in the list of games, maybe it is not supported in that Mame version?
I had been struggling with Retroarch before, which is a tad faster than Mame4Droid. However, Retroarch has a terrible game selection screen, no NVram saving, and no analog joystick support AFAIK. So I am only using it for CPS3 games at the moment, which run at full speed in Retroarch/FBA core. Instead I switched to Mame4Droid for everything else.
What are your experiences/recommendations?
