Hello,
I used to be part of the Monroeworld forums many years ago when I was a student, and loved especially the old shows with Brian. I remember the Mario World play session "Who's that? That's Yoshi! He is my minion!". I even bought the signed DVD collection. My wife thinks Shane sounds like Rush Limbaugh when he goes on his rants, but I still enjoy even those!
I came across greenrobotgamer because I recently bought a Shield (see below). I registered so I could share some retrogaming related links and discuss the Shield in general.
I have been a retrogamer since the nineties, since the first Commodore 64 emulator came out on DOS (I believe it was called PC64 back then).
I started gaming in the eighties when I was six years old, first on a C64 and later on an Amstrad CPC. As I grew up with my brother, we went through all the computer and console generations: NES, Amiga 500, SNES, Amiga 1200, Gameboy, Atari Lynx, Neogeo, Playstation 1. Then, as a college student, I continued with Gamecube and PS2. Now I own a PS3 and Wii, but only use them for Netflix.
I never have time anymore to sit down for stationary gaming on the sofa, and I hate playing on the phone without a controller. But portable gaming is perfet for me. I got a PSP 2.5 years ago. It is still my favorite retrogaming platform. I can play whenever I have a little bit of time, such as in bed just before falling asleep in the evening. This is very common for me and I actually played through many retrogames recently doing this. For example, I recently completed Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion and Zero, Zelda Link to the Past, Minish Cap and Link's Awakening, Super Mario World and many more, just by playing half an hour every evening before I fall asleep.
However, the PSP is too slow for Amiga emulation, and even the SNES emulation slows down with heavy games like Super Turrican. I first purchased a netbook for portable Amiga emulation (Gateway LS series). It worked great, and I could even use my PSP as a controller, so I wouldn't have to pack an extra controller when I was traveling. But all in all the netbook was still too clunky for me.
Then, earlier this year, I bought an Nvidia Shield. It was a great investment. The Amiga emulation, UAE4All2, is even better than I expected. It runs perfect and I love it. I can even play Slamtilt AGA with zero slowdown and no frameskip. However, I dislike the feel of the DPad on it and that it is so clunky. So I still use my PSP a lot, too.
That's it in a nutshell.
